Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a key way we develop skills and support careers at Exeter City Council. They combine paid work with structured training, leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

Whether you’re starting out or developing your career, an apprenticeship allows you to learn on the job while gaining practical experience and formal training.

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a structured training programme that lets you earn while you learn.

You’ll spend most of your time in your role, building practical skills and experience. At least 20% of your paid working hours are dedicated to off-the-job training, usually delivered by a college or university.

Apprenticeships last between 12 months and five years, depending on the qualification.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for an apprenticeship, you must generally:

  • Be aged 16 or over
  • Not be in full-time education
  • Have the right to work in the UK and meet residency requirements

We offer apprenticeship opportunities both to new applicants and to existing employees looking to upskill or retrain.

Apprenticeships for existing employees

If you already work for Exeter City Council, apprenticeships can be used to support your development into your current role or a future role.

The process is straightforward:

  • Talk to your manager about the apprenticeship you’re interested in and the time needed for training
  • Complete an application form and submit it to your manager
  • Approval is considered by the Apprenticeship Approval Panel, which meets twice a year
  • Once approved, you’ll apply to the training provider and complete a training plan before enrolling

Apprenticeship training must be directly linked to a current or future role, ensuring the skills gained meet a clear business need.
