High Hedge Complaints: Guidance for Residents
Eligibility Criteria
A complaint may be submitted if the hedge meets ALL of the following conditions:
- Located on residential land owned by an immediate neighbour
- Consisting of a line of 2 or more trees
- Exceeding 2 metres in height
- Predominantly evergreen
- Significantly impacting the reasonable enjoyment of your property by obstructing light or views
Complaint Process
Preliminary Steps
- Attempt direct resolution with your neighbour
- Document all communication attempts
- Verify you meet all complaint criteria
Required Documentation
- Detailed hedge information
- Names and addresses of all parties involved
- Evidence of prior resolution attempts
- Complaint fee of £350
Official Investigation
The local authority will:
- Act as an impartial adjudicator
- Review submitted complaint documentation
- Assess hedge impact objectively
- Provide formal determination
Important Conditions:
- The authority cannot mediate directly
- Complaint investigation occurs only after exhausting personal resolution methods
- Fee payment does not guarantee a specific outcome
