4. Appraisals and Management Plans
There are 20 Conservation Areas in Exeter. A programme to update the existing Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Plans is under way.
Appraisals identify the special character of an area, explain how the area developed over time, and identify the buildings and features that make a special contribution to the character of the area. Management plans identify opportunities for enhancement and describe types of development that should be avoided. The appraisals and management plans inform planning decisions.
Appraisal and management plan documents should be used at the earliest stage in project planning by anyone planning to develop land or buildings in a conservation area. The documents will help you to better understand the character of the area and how it has changed over time, and help you to develop a design that respects and responds to this special character.
Development in a conservation area will be expected to make a positive contribution to the special character of the conservation area. Management plans may include a checklist of requirements and proposals to enhance the conservation area.
