Buildings of local importance

Exeter has many old buildings that are of value historically, but are not recognised nationally through statutory protection as a ‘listed building’. As all heritage assets are finite resources that cannot be replaced, the adopted Exeter Local Plan First Review has identified a number of ‘non-designated’ heritage assets of local importance. These are buildings of importance to the historic fabric and social history of the city. This is often referred to as the 'Local List'.

 

These buildings have been specifically selected because they demonstrate one or more of the following :

• Structures of architectural and/ or historic interest which to date have not been considered sufficiently special in national terms to merit inclusion on the statutory list.
• Structures which have prominence and a landmark quality, and which therefore make an important contribution to the identity of the city (i.e. which are therefore fundamental to the local sense of place and/or to the cherished local scene).
• Structures which are particularly associated with, and resonant of, locally distinctive activities, events, personalities, and communities.
• Exemplars of distinctive and/or special building types and styles, particularly if now locally rare or unusual, or if constructed in local materials.
