Historic Environment Record

Historic Environment Records (HERs) contain background information on:

• Archaeological remains.
• Historic buildings and structures.
• Historic landscapes, parks and gardens.

Searching the records is a necessary part of carrying out background research for development proposals. It is also beneficial for those undertaking local history studies and academic and other research. The information held in the records also underpins the advice provided by our Archaeology Officer and colleagues. 

 

Viewing the records

We maintain a computerised, map-based record for the historic core of Exeter. This contains information on both archaeological remains and historic buildings, and reconstructions of the city's layout through history. 

We maintain a database of detailed background information which helps to build the map. Examples of the information we hold include;

• Locations of past excavations.
• Reconstructed layouts of the city through its history.
• Listed buildings throughout the city.

Devon County Council currently maintain the record for the outer city district. That includes information on archaeological remains and on the historic landscape.

We are in the process of creating a new combined Historic Environment Record for all areas of the city.

The Exeter controlled HER can be viewed by prior appointment with our Archaeology Officer, to do this  please contact us online. 

The County HER can be viewed by appointment with the County Historic Environment Service, please email archaeol@devon.gov.uk.

Currently no charge is made for visits to our HER, although copying charges do apply.
