4. Apply to carry out works on a protected tree
You must apply for permission to carry out works on a protected tree, or a tree in a conservation area. The application process is like applying for planning permission for building works.
Please note that
- there is no fee for submitting a TPO application.
- all application documents will be published on our website for public inspection. Personal data such as private telephone numbers, email addresses, and signatures will be redacted.

We strongly recommend that you contact us for advice before commencing any works. Carrying out unauthorised works on a protected tree may constitute a criminal offence.

- details of the proposed tree works, including measurements
- any photographs you have of the tree in an electronic format
When we receive your application we will send you a letter with your application number. If you have sent us all of the information we need, your application will be made valid.
We will look at your application to see how it affects the local area, the environment, and other people, and decide if you can go ahead.
We will usually tell you our decision within 8 weeks.
If you have not sent all the information we need your application will be invalid, and we will contact you to tell you what extra information we need.
