10. Will I get paid?
Councillors are not paid a salary but are entitled to receive financial compensation called an ‘allowance’ as well as expenses. This covers costs such a travel to and from meetings, and recognises the time devoted to council business on behalf of local people.
At Exeter City Council, the basic allowance is £7,296 per year.
All councillors are paid the basic allowance and councillors with specific roles within the council, such as portfolio holders and committee chairs receive a special responsibility allowance in addition, to reflect the level of work and additional time commitment required.
Councillors can claim back costs for childcare and other caring services whilst on certain councillor duties.

All allowances for members are agreed by council, following recommendations from the Independent Remuneration Panel.
