4. Training and development
Whilst you don’t need any official qualifications, there are several useful skills which help councillors carry out their role.
You will receive training and development opportunities and become more experienced and confident once elected. Useful skills for being a councillor include:
- Being a leader in your community
- Having good communication skills
- Partnership and team working
- Problem solving, questioning, and analytical skills
- Being flexible, adaptable, and open-minded
- Being organised and having good time management skills
- Having political understanding
