1. What is Biodiversity Net Gain?
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a statutory requirement introduced by the UK Government in 2024. It aims to improve wildlife habitats through the development process. Under this legislation, developers must demonstrate a minimum 10% increase in biodiversity value on or around development sites. These biodiversity enhancements must be secured and maintained for at least 30 years.
BNG supports our council's commitment to addressing the ecological emergency and creating a more resilient natural environment for future generations. By enhancing local biodiversity, we can help support ecosystem services, improve community wellbeing, and contribute to climate change resilience.
Legal Framework
The statutory requirement for BNG can be found in Schedule 7A of The Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as inserted by Schedule 14 of The Environment Act 2021). This legislation came into effect on:
- 12 February 2024 for major developments.
- 2 April 2024 for minor developments.
