4. BNG application requirements and process

If your development is not exempt, you will need to submit the following with your planning application:

  1. A completed BNG Metric calculation (see guide below) demonstrating a minimum 10% net gain, using:
    • The Biodiversity Metric 4.0 for major developments. This must be completed by a qualified ecologist.
    • The Small Sites Metric for eligible minor developments. This must be completed by someone capable of identifying habitats in line with UKHab's classifications.
  2. Your BNG Plan showing:
    • Habitat baseline assessment.
    • Proposed habitat enhancements.
    • Implementation timeline.
    • Management and monitoring arrangements for the 30-year period.
  3. The site layout plans showing the location and extent of habitat retention, enhancement, and creation.

 

Planning Application Process

  1. Pre-application consultation - We strongly encourage you to engagement with our team at the earliest opportunity (see pre-application advice).
  2. Application submission - Including all required BNG documentation.
  3. Application validation - Checking all necessary BNG information is included (see validation checklist).
  4. Application assessment - Review by planning officers and ecology specialists.
  5. Decision and securing BNG - Through legislation, planning conditions and/or legal agreements.
