Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Developers can achieve BNG through three main routes:

1. On-site provision - Incorporating biodiversity improvements within the development site.
2. Off-site provision - Securing biodiversity improvements on land elsewhere.
3. Statutory biodiversity credits - Purchasing credits from the government as a last resort.

The preferred approach is to deliver biodiversity improvements on-site wherever possible, in line with the mitigation hierarchy of "avoid, mitigate, compensate".
