CCTV
Exeter City Council has a network of over 300+ CCTV cameras, known as 'the system', the system is controlled using Genetec software. The system is monitored 24/7 – 365 by the Councils dedicated team who are trained and licensed by the Security Industry Authority for public space surveillance.
The Control room team also monitors similar systems on behalf of Mid Devon District Council, Honiton Town Council, South Hams & West Devon Council and Stagecoach UK ltd.
The systems are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office and regulated under the General Data Protection Regulations 2018 and the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. The system also complies with the Surveillance camera commissioners '12 guiding principles'.
The purpose of 'The system' is:
- To help deter and detect crime.
- To help reduce the fear of crime.
- To enhance community safety, boost the economy and encourage greater use of Exeter City Centre, Tiverton & Honiton town centres.
- To assist local councils in their enforcement and regulatory functions.
Images are captured in multiple digital formats which are then stored for 30 days then automatically deleted (Unless vaulted for evidential purposes relating to the prevention and detection of crime).
Cameras in sensitive areas are masked to avoid any avoidable invasion of privacy.
