Be part of Pride in Place - apply to become a Board member
We are looking for people to join our Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board for the Whipton and Heavitree area.
What is a Neighbourhood Board?
A Neighbourhood Board helps make local decisions about your area.
The Board will:
- Create a 10-year plan for the area
- Decide how funding should be spent
- Make sure plans reflect real community needs
- Work with local people and groups
- Track progress, providing challenge and guidance as the programme develops
- Speak up for the neighbourhood as an advocate and ambassador.
As a team we will oversee delivery of the programme and ensure all funding meets legal requirements.
About the role
The Neighbourhood Board is led by an independent Neighbourhood Board Independent Chair.
This is a volunteer role. You do not need past board experience.
You will help guide changes in your area over the next 10 years.
You will:
- Go to meetings and take part in key decision-making
- Share your ideas and local knowledge
- Make fair decisions for the benefit of the whole community
- Follow the Board’s Code of Conduct
- Support open and honest decision making
- Join training and support sessions.
Boards will meet more often at the start of the programme while the ten year plan and first Investment Plan are developed. Ongoing meeting frequency will be decided by the Board.
Who we are looking for
We want people from different backgrounds and experiences who have a connection with to the Whipton and Heavitree area.
You do not need special skills or experience.
We are looking for people who:
- Live or work in the Pride in Place neighbourhood (at least 51% of Board members must do so): About Pride in Place
- Care about this community
- Understand local issues and have strong connections to the community
- Are fair and respectful
- Support equality and inclusion
- Can listen to different views and work with others
- Can bring knowledge, enthusiasm and lived experience

- Local businesses.

We strongly encourage people who often feel left out of decision-making to apply.

- What you can bring to the Board in your skills and/or experience?
- Why you want to join.
You can apply in two ways:
- A written statement (up to 500 words), or,
- A short video (3–5 minutes).

Expenses and support
We want everyone to be able to take part. We will cover reasonable expenses to support participation.
What happens next?
- Applications will be reviewed by the Neighbourhood Board Chair
- We will look for a good mix of people and skills
- Some applicants may be invited to an informal chat on 10th and 11th August
- Final decisions will then be made.
