5. Service charges
This information is for Exeter City Council tenants. If you are an Exeter City Council leaseholder we have a separate section for leaseholder service charges.
Service charges
You will only pay service charges if you live in a home which benefits from a service such as in a block of flats with shared areas or Older Persons’ Housing.
Service charges can include things like:
- Cleaning of shared areas such as stairwells and corridors
- Lighting in communal areas
- Grounds maintenance, including grass cutting and shared gardens
- Caretaking or communal safety checks
- Shared services such as door entry systems or lifts (if provided)
You only pay for services that apply to your home or building.
If this applies to you, service charges will be payable alongside your rent.
We calculate the cost of each service provided by estimating the amount we are likely to spend in providing services to you over the coming year and dividing that fairly between the homes that must pay it.
We will give you a list of the services provided at the start of your tenancy and at the start of each financial year.
We may vary the services provided or introduce new services. If we do, the amount you pay in service charges will change accordingly. If we do make a change, we will give you at least 4 weeks’ notice.
