6. Water hygiene and safety
Clean water is essential for drinking, washing, cooking and cleaning. Water in the UK is very safe, but like all water systems it can contain small amounts of bacteria. These can become a problem if water is left unused or not managed properly.
We regularly manage and monitor water systems in communal areas and higher-risk properties. There are also simple steps you can take at home to help keep your water safe.
How to stay safe
Please do:
- run all taps and showers for at least 5 minutes once a week, and when you first move in and when you return home from being away from home
- clean shower heads and tap spouts every 3 months, or before using them after a long break
- empty and refresh drinking water daily
- fully drain hosepipes after use
- clean and empty any water containers at least once a year
Please do not:
- drink water that has been stored for more than 24 hours
- change your boiler or hot water settings — hot water must stay at 60°C to prevent bacteria
