9. Window and door safety
Windows and doors need to be used safely, especially where children live. Children are naturally curious and may not recognise risks such as falls, getting trapped, or leaving the home unsupervised.
Taking a few simple precautions can help prevent accidents.
How to keep children safe
You can help by:
- making sure window restrictors and safety locks are in place and working
- using suitable child-proof locks on external doors
- keeping furniture away from windows to prevent climbing
- supervising children in rooms with open or unlocked windows or doors
- teaching children about the dangers of leaning out of windows or opening doors without permission
